Equal parts lyrical and geometric, Hans Reichel’s Seeschnecken (Sea Snails) from 1940 is one of the artist’s most colorful and vibrant compositions. Reichel, much like his contemporaries Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, harmonized line and color to create paintings that embody energy and enliven organic forms. In the present work, the fluidity and brightness of watercolor and pastel animate a collection of sea snails. The curling rings of their shelled backs meld naturally into thin, stylized lines, positioning the work as both abstract and representational at once. Reichel layered hues of pink, purple, and green to create an effervescent atmosphere. Seeschnecken (Sea Snails) represents the artist’s commitment to portraying joy and celebrating life.Provenance
