Lieu de coïncidences exemplifies Jean Dubuffet’s rebellious aesthetic defined by spontaneous mark-making and a commitment to personal creative authenticity. Dubuffet cultivated what he termed an “anticultural position” and abandoned convention to explore new methods of representation using unusual materials and techniques. [1] Dubuffet’s artistic experiments coalesced in Art Brut, a movement he spearheaded that recognized art created by traditionally marginalized groups and encouraged artists to produce work according to these principles. In Lieu de coïncidences, a complex network of agitated black lines builds a rhythmic energy that emanates from the composition. The instinctively scrawled contours recall the Surrealist practice of automatism, the process of creating art without conscious thought in order to reach the subconscious of the artist. Seven figures stand interspersed throughout the labyrinth, their disoriented bodies dwarfed by the immense power of the surrounding interplay of planes and biomorphic shapes in the background, reminiscent of the Hourloupe series Dubuffet developed throughout the 1960s and 70s.[1] Jean Dubuffet, “Anticultural Positions” (lecture, The Arts Club of Chicago, 1951), reprinted in Jean Dubuffet (New York: World House Gallery, 1960), 192.
