As a highly abstract metaphor for eroticism, Loie Hollowell’s 2016 Stacked Lingam in red, yellow, purple and green is emblematic of the artist’s signature style. As one of Hollowell’s several “Lingam” paintings, the present work utilizes the phallic symbol of the Hindu god Shiva. The snaking phallus spans the entire length of the canvas, ultimately leading towards the highlighted mandorla shape in the center of the composition. The mandorla–a symbol of the vagina–interacts with the lingam to represent intercourse, a key motif in Hollowell’s work. Intensely saturated strokes of red fade elegantly into peach, pale pink, and deep maroon. The intensity of color and light in her compositions, what the artist refers to as a chiaroscuro effect, portrays the pulsation and energy of an orgasm. [1]
