André Masson’s Les Corbeaux is a mysterious landscape inspired by the forests in and around Ile-de-France and Brittany. During this pre-Surrealist period, Masson developed a complex attitude towards the marvels of the natural world, an attitude that came to define elements of his surrealist ethos. In Les Corbeaux, crows are seen flying above a dense, autumnal forest. In the winter of 1921, Masson moved to 45 rue Blomet, in Paris, with Joan Miró as an artist-neighbor and writers Antonin Artaud and Michel Leiris as close acquaintances. 1922 marked an important year for Masson. He signed a contract with the important dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler - and Les Corbeaux was exhibited at Masson’s first solo show at Kahnweiler's Galerie Simon in 1924.Provenance
