In 1957, Piero Manzoni, deep
in dialogue with fellow avant-garde artists Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri
and Yves Klein, began his series of achromes. Manzoni sought to reduce painting
to a state of absolute purity devoid of representation. These
works foregrounded a reductivist process and an absolute absence of
color (hence their titles as achrome). He achieved minimal materiality
by avoiding traditional brushes and paint altogether, as evidenced in
this 1958 Achrome. We witness a sublime end result of his material process
where he employed only canvas and kaolin, a type of liquid
plaster used primarily in the fabrication of porcelain. Navigating
between randomness and control, Manzoni allowed the canvas to react naturally
during the drying process, giving rise to alluring
and suggestive folds.Provenance
