The present work is artist proof number 1 from the edition and is the only example cast in lead. This work is accompanied by a photo-certificate of authenticity issued by Olivier Lorquin under no. 2913, dated October 29, 2013. Petite Montagne (1er état) stands among only a small number of studies Maillol produced in lead. The form of La Montagne marked a culmination of Maillol's allegorical renditions of the seated female nude, themes first explored in his earlier La Nuit and La Méditerranée. Inspired by his greatest muse Dina Vierny, La Montagne was one of the first major works modeled after her image.
