Executed in 1974. Having largely worked with wood and plaster for the majority of his early career, Agustín Cárdenas exhibited his first marble works in 1961 at the Galerie du...Executed in 1974. Having largely worked with wood and plaster for the majority of his early career, Agustín Cárdenas exhibited his first marble works in 1961 at the Galerie du Dragon in Paris. In 1963, Cárdenas moved to Carrara, Italy where sculptors throughout history, including Michelangelo, traveled to source and work from marble quarries. Evolving from the shiny texture of his burnt wood sculptures, Cárdenas’ marble works, including La Petite Fenêtre from 1974, emit a soft, delicate glow. The present work stands in stark contrast to Cárdenas’s earlier bold, dark, vertical totems, and speaks to a more lyrical and optimistic artistic vision. La Petite Fenêtre is particularly reminiscent of Jean Arp’s biomorphic forms–slightly figural and wholly abstract. As the name suggests, La Petite Fenêtre appears as a conceptualized window that, depending on its orientation, frames the viewer’s surroundings within its marble margins.Provenance
