Painted in 1968.
Vieira da Silva titles this work after the Greek goddess of the moon, Artémis. She channels the colors of the moon and the sky, creating a serene patchwork of celestial hues. The variegated blue rectangles and squares of Artémis recall the Hispano-Arabic Azulejo tiles prevalent during the artist’s childhood in Portugal. With its delicately placed geometric strokes, Artémis represents the artist’s return to defining shapes in cubic matrices and recalling the visual atmosphere of her youth.
