Ingrid Donat France & Sweden, b. 1957

Ingrid Donat (b. 1957, Paris, France) is a French-Swedish designer. She initially studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and in the 1980s, began designing furniture at the encouragement of her friend, the artist Diego Giacometti. Donat’s signature as a designer is her elegant use of the weighty medium of bronze. Drawing on her sculptural background, she produces furniture that is reminiscent of Art Deco style while also contemporary and experimental in its materiality. The tactility of Donat’s use of metal, created through scarification techniques, reveals the presence of her hand in her furniture. Donat’s oeuvre is exceptional for its balance between refinement and otherworldliness.
